 The ski resorts include four splendid valleys, the Val di luce, the Valle dello Scoltenna, the Valle del Sestaione and the Val della Lima. The ski-lifts start from 1200 metres and reach a height of 1930 metres above sea level, and serve a network of slopes of varying difficulty for both downhill skiing and snowboarding. There are also some trails in the area available for cross-country skiing. Enthusiasts have at their disposal modern equipment such as cableways, chair-lifts, ski-lifts, baby-lifts and a cutting edge cable car with automatic release. The snow cover is always in perfect condition thanks to the help of the programmed snow machines: the snow cannons (100 at Abetone and 22 at Doganaccia) are aimed at all of the downhill slopes and cover most of the surface, which gives the resorts skiiable slopes right through to the spring. Excellent ski schools with qualified instructors offer both the competitor and the beginner individual or group lessons of skiing and snowboarding.
